The written word existed from the times of Indus Valley Civilization during the Kot Diji and Mature Harappan periods between the 35th and 20th centuries BC. The Aryans brought Sanskrit, Ayurveda and steel instruments that helped the growth of surgery in India. Susruta expounded the secrets of surgery through his tome "Susruta Samhita" which is referenced and revered till date.

As its first Editor-in-Chief, I have the great privilege of transcending the tradition of "the written word" to the modern history of vascular surgery in India through this inaugural issue of Indian Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery. The Journal is the official publication of Vascular Society of India.

Vascular and Endovascular Surgery is rapidly advancing. Basic sciences, lab and clinical research, techniques and technology continue to grow at an exponential pace. Spectrum and complexity of vascular diseases in India is relatively unknown making India a fertile ground for new research and perhaps indigenous modifications of extrapolated practice of similar conditions in the West.

This journal, therefore aims to be a showcase for the original work being done in India. It will also endeavour to reflect a mirror to all vascular surgeons contributing to vascular education, research, quality initiatives and clinical practice in our country, to strive for excellence.

The Journal would not have materialized without the contributions of friends and colleagues in India and all over the world. Foremost among them are senior vascular surgeons who appreciated the need for our Society's Journal many years before I got involved, VSI Leadership who share my vision, my extremely hard working editors and our publishers Medknow, Wolters Kluwer who share my passion for vascular surgery in India. A special thanks to all my vascular surgery friends internationally who have solidly supported me in this endeavor.

Now that the Journal is born, the next few years are going to be very exciting. I intend to raise the bar with every issue and look forward to high- quality contributions from all of you, in whatever part of India or the world you live.

Thank you again for this honour and privilege.
