French Sculptor Auguste Rodin's monumental bronze figure “Le Penseur” (The Thinker) sitting atop a lintel since late 19th century embodies “… universal image that reveals in physical terms the mental effort and even anguish of creativity…” and “… every creator who draws new life from the imagination….” As Rodin himself described the pensive figure”… (What makes my Thinker think is that he thinks not only with his brain, with his knitted brow, his distended nostrils and compressed lips but also with every muscle of his arms, back, and legs, with his clenched fist and gripping toes). “Le Penseur” also became a symbol of knowledge. If we can meld the essence of above creeds, then we can comprehend the thought, imagination and creativity, and mental and physical efforts, requisite to create a “work of knowledge.”

The towering, muscular figure of “Le Penseur” has captivated audiences for decades in his moment of “Concentré d'introspection” (concentrated introspection). Introspect we must and we should “Pense que là où nous sommes et où nous allons” (Think where we are and where we are heading), which brings us to the crux of this editorial “Notre Journal va-t-il dans la bonne direction?” (Journal – Heading in the right direction?) I like to believe we are, both in quantity and, more importantly in quality. The latter is not fortuitous; it's due to authors from across the globe who deemed fit to submit their articles to IJVES; to the efforts of many, who reviewed the articles and gave us exemplary appraisals and rectifications; and to many who wrote commendable commentaries!

The present, committed members of the Editorial Board came together in April 2017 and clearly understand “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success” (Henry Ford). Success and progress are intertwined but do not have a finish line with waving checkered flag! To quote Sir Winston Churchill “Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb.” We certainly believe in this maxim.

Shifting from esoteric to mundane – the numbers and figures depicted below trace the ontogeny of IJVES. The progress since inception is in continuum, with perceptible acceleration since April 2017.

A brief about some transformations that have been instituted:

  1. The circulation of the print journal increased from 400 to 2060. Furthermore, the number of pages per issue has grown from mere 30 to now about 100
  2. All “teaching departments” in general surgery, orthopedics, cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, radiology, and neurology in India receive the journal free of cost – an effort to increase awareness about vascular diseases and wide spectrum of therapies offered
  3. Over a thousand “on-line” versions are sent by e-mails
  4. One of the Editorial Board members and then an invited expert reviewer critiques every manuscript. This has significantly increased the quality of the articles
  5. Invited commentary and review articles by renowned experts in the field are a significant value addition to the journal.

The number of articles submitted has increased substantially [Figure 1]. IJVES is also gradually becoming a platform for many vascular specialists outside India to publish their articles in our peer-reviewed, indexed journal [Figure 2], and it is indubitable that the numbers will continue to expand.

The Journal is now “visible,” and the viewership has substantially increased, as have the downloads in various forms [Figure 3], [Figure 4], [Figure 5].

Notre Journal va-t-il dans la bonne direction? – Is the Journal heading the right direction? It appears so, but as Churchill said road ahead is long with finish line never in sight, and we keep going forward searching for the next level of excellence.

I would like to sign off by invoking Thomas Macaulay – ”Every generation enjoys the use of a vast hoard of knowledge bequeathed to it by antiquity and transmits that hoard, augmented by fresh acquisitions, to future ages.”

Postscript: I do not feign to know French; I acknowledge the translating expertise of my French colleague Prof. Jean-Baptiste Ricco for his assistance.
